Jannik Sinner secured a hard-fought victory over Nicolas Jarry (No. 34) by 7-6, 7-6, 6-3, advancing to the second round of the Australian Open. The World No. 1 began his title defence on a strong note, overcoming a challenging task against the Chilean, who delivered an impressive performance. However, in crucial moments, it was the Italian who prevailed.
Sinner faced a tough opening-round draw against a player who has proven his calibre on the Tour but missed a seeded position. The two-time Grand Slam champion had to showcase his best game to surpass an inspired Jarry.
Despite it being his first match of the season, Sinner quickly demonstrated that he did not need much time on the court to find his rhythm. Both players held serve comfortably throughout most of the set. In the seventh and eighth games, each had two break point opportunities but failed to capitalise.
Sinner showed signs of frustration towards his box, given the lack of rhythm in the match, as neither player gave many chances on serve. Jarry saved a set point in the twelfth game, forcing a tie-break. Sinner's early mini-break brought him calm, allowing him to claim the set 7-6[7-2]. Jarry was the more aggressive player with 21 winners compared to Sinner's 10, but his 22 unforced errors overshadowed the Italian's mere four.
In the second set, Jarry remained focused and maintained a dominant serve, landing 78% of first serves and winning 83% of those points. The Chilean played aggressively, but Sinner's consistency and composure kept him in the match.
In another tight set without break points, the tie-break decided the outcome once again. Sinner showcased his status as World No. 1, handling the pressure better to secure a 7-5 advantage.
Despite Jarry's solid performance, Sinner excelled in key moments. With the odds against him, Jarry displayed courage until the end, constantly motivating himself after winning points. However, his game gradually unravelled as Sinner broke early in the third set and capitalised on Jarry’s inconsistency to close out the match 7-6(2), 7-6(5), 6-1.
The Italian proved he is ready to compete at the highest level, eliminating a rival who showed glimpses of his best tennis but ultimately couldn't surpass the defending champion.
15th consecutive win. 14th consecutive straight sets win.
