Mirra Andreeva achieved a significant victory over Ons Jabeur, winning 6-4, 7-6(2) to advance to the semifinals of the WTA 500 Brisbane International. The Russian teenager showcased her authority once again, defeating the Tunisian in a compelling match that, despite errors from both players in the first set, delivered an exciting showdown in the final stages.

Both players took time to find their rhythm, managing to hold their first service games without facing break points. By the third game, Andreeva (No. 16) was already showing frustration, throwing her racket to the ground, while Jabeur (No. 40) gradually gained confidence and reduced her errors as the minutes went by.

The players exchanged breaks in the fifth and sixth games, maintaining parity. However, Andreeva seized another opportunity in the seventh game to take the lead. She held onto her serve and closed the set 6-4, which lacked many extended rallies.

The second set offered much more entertainment, with Jabeur frequently testing her drop shots, causing problems for Andreeva. The former world No. 2 produced several brilliant points reminiscent of her prime, demonstrating she has not lost her delicate touch.

Andreeva secured the first break and piled pressure on Jabeur, but the 3-time Grand Slam finalist regained her confidence with a good streak of consecutive points, including spectacular exchanges. She broke back following a double fault from the Russian, who appeared unfocused. Jabeur had the chance to close the set at 5-3 but handed the game to the teenager after another double fault. Andreeva regained her composure, dominating from the baseline.

Jabeur had two set points at 6-5, but Andreeva held firm on her serve to force a tiebreak. In the decisive moments, the Russian displayed greater mental stability, capitalized on several errors from Jabeur early in the tiebreak, and stepped up when it mattered most to secure a 6-4, 7-6(2) victory.

When Jabeur found her rhythm, she managed to counter Andreeva’s consistency. The Tunisian displayed good form this week and will surely arrive at the year’s first Grand Slam with high ambitions. However, this loss means Jabeur misses the chance to enter the Australian Open as one of the seeds, leaving her exposed to facing top players early in the draw.

Andreeva’s next challenge could be none other than world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, though the Belarusian first needs to overcome Marie Bouzkova (No. 44).
