Iga Swiatek began her title defense with a comfortable 6-2, 6-0 victory over Caroline Garcia. The two-time Indian Wells champion had little trouble against the Frenchwoman and improved her record in Tennis Paradise to 19-2 (90.4%).
Swiatek made a statement in just one hour and three minutes, taking her first step towards a third Indian Wells title, which would eventually make her the tournament’s most successful champion.
Swiatek is arguably the most consistent player on the WTA Tour, rarely struggling in tournament openers. She faced a tough draw against Caroline Garcia (No. 71), a former WTA Finals champion and former world No. 4.
Swiatek secured an early break, but doubts on her serve allowed Garcia to break back. However, from that moment on, the Pole looked comfortable returning Garcia’s serve—once one of the best on tour—and regained the break to go up 3-1.
The Frenchwoman managed to hold serve just once more. With Swiatek leading 3-2, she reeled off three consecutive games. The world No. 2 had some struggles closing the set, more due to her own errors than Garcia’s shots, but she kept a cool head under pressure to secure the set 6-2.
In the second set, Swiatek ‘opened the bakery,’ serving up a bagel to Garcia. The world No. 2 was nearly flawless, converting three of four break points. The five-time Grand Slam champion had slight serving issues midway through the set, but Garcia failed to capitalize on her only chances.
The Frenchwoman landed just 50% of her first serves, winning a poor 33% of those points and only 22% on her second serve. She fared no better on return, winning just 28% of total points.
Swiatek broke three times in a row in just 27 minutes, winning nine consecutive games to close the match 6-2, 6-0. A dominant start for the two-time champion against an opponent who, despite her struggles, remains a dangerous player.
