Mardy Fish
lost the final of the American Century Championship against Stephen Curry after
the crowd's booing on the final hole.
The former
world No. 7 competed in a celebrity golf tournament that had a significant
prize of $125,000. Mardy
Fish's chances of winning the American Century Championship seemed to have been
ruined on the final hole after a fan yelled during his tee shot. The former
professional tennis player, playing alongside NBA legend Steph Curry and NHL star
Joe Pavelski, was leading the celebrity tournament as the trio reached the
par-five final hole.
However,
as Fish prepared to take his drive, the 41-year-old was visibly disheartened by
a shout from someone in the nearby crowd. Consequently, the American mishit his
shot, sending the ball straight into the heavy rough.
From
there, he managed to make par, but unfortunately, he was overtaken by his
playing partner, Curry, who sank an 18-foot putt for an eagle, becoming the
fifth active athlete to win the tournament.
The
championship utilizes a modified Stableford scoring system, where players
receive three points for a birdie, one point for a par, and minus two points
for a double bogey or worse. With the eagle, Curry moved to 75 points, two
ahead of Fish, who had previously won the tournament in 2020.
Golden
State Warriors' star celebrated his victory with his family, and his $125,000
cash prize was donated to charity. The 35-year-old player had already caught
attention earlier in the tournament when he made a hole-in-one on the par-three
seventh hole of 152 yards on Saturday.
"I
don't do this for a living, so it's something you dream about," said Curry
after his victory on Sunday. "I've been playing in this tournament for
almost a decade, and now I have some hardware to show for it. It's pretty
special."
