The man accused of stealing
Nick Kyrgios' luxury green tesla and holding the 28-year-old's mother at gunpoint has been in custody for 10 weeks as police are given a new deadline to finalize an evidence brief against him.
The man, who is not being named for legal reasons, has pleaded not guilty to five charges: aggravated robbery, driving a vehicle without consent, failing to stop for police, resisting a public official, and driving while suspended.
The traumatic event occurred back in May, and forced Kyrgios to miss the French Open due to a foot injury allegedly sustained during the incident.
Man allegedly held Kyrgios' mother at gunpoint
On Monday, May 1 at around 8:30 am, a masked man wearing all black knocked on the front door of Kyrgios' family home in Canberra. When his mother answered the door, she was met with a long-barrel firearm, according to court documents.
The man then allegedly demanded that Kyrgios' mother give him the keys to the Tesla, and held her at gunpoint as he told her to show him how to drive it.
Kyrgios proceeded to use his Tesla smartphone app to track the live location of the car and was able to limit its speed to 80 km/h. Police were then able to find it and pursue the man until they were able to cordon off a street to block his escape, and he was subsequently arrested.
Process has been delayed
A new deadline of September 12 has been given to the police to finalize an evidence brief against the accused. The man's defence barrister Jan De Bruin has appealed to the ACT Magistrates Court, asking them to expediate the process.
This is the second time that there has been a delay due to police not being able to produce an evidence brief.
