Boris Becker was imprisoned in April 2022 for
bankruptcy fraud and sent a message to Prince Harry.
The 55-year-old former tennis player was sentenced to
two and a half years after being found guilty in a case related to the Insolvency
Act. The German sent a message to Prince Harry:
“Don’t forget where you come from, because you may
have to go back there. And marriages don’t always last forever, last time I
checked.”
The 6-time Grand Slam
champion was a commentator for the BBC when he was supposed to begin his
sentence at London's notorious HMP Wandsworth.
“It’s a dangerous place. After the first week, I
realised that this is survival, and if I spend any time looking back, I’m
losing,” said Becker.
“I need all my energy to survive every
single day. The moment they come with the keys – you hear it, it’s a noise you
never forget.”
Becker was then transferred to Huntercombe
Prison in Nuffield and said that he was there "surrounded by murderers,
drug dealers, people smugglers," former world No. 1 said.
“At first, you’re scared, because this guy
killed two people with his hands, he’s already doing 18 years. Imagine! He
becomes your buddy," and added “The British justice system is brutal.”
The former tennis player still denies the charges he
was found guilty of:
"It was naivety, it was bad advice. But it wasn’t bad
intention . Should I have better advisers? Yes. I’m going to start listening to
my common sense, instead of having these tens of advisers and lawyers.”
“We all struggle with our taxes. And the more money
you have, the more complicated it gets.”
Becker was released from prison and deported to
Germany after seven and a half months, and he is currently living in
Munich."
