Caroline Wozniacki has opened up on the reasons behind her comeback as she prepares to compete at the
US Open.
Former world No. 1 Wozniacki originally retired from the sport in 2020. Since then, she and her NBA star husband David Lee have welcomed two children.
However, in June of this year, Wozniacki announced that she would be returning to tennis. Subsequently, videos emerged of her training before the 33-year-old made her comeback at the Canadian Open earlier this month.
Wozniacki says she "will always cherish the game"
Recently, Wozniacki talked about her love for the sport and how it motivated her to come back, although she said that when she initially retired, she didn't play for a while.
"I didn't play for a long time, I didn't even touch my rackets, I didn't know where they were. I have been playing since I was very young, it has been part of my day-to-day and my lifestyle, but I needed a break. Obviously, I took advantage of it to have two children at that stage," she said.
Nevertheless, the 2018 Australian Open champion said that she started to miss certain aspects of the sport.
"I suddenly started to miss the cardio aspect, because I will always love the game, no matter if I am 33 or turning 80. I will always cherish the game and all it has given me. I hope to always be in shape so if I want to go out and play some balls, I can hit them, play doubles or whatever with my friends," she continued.
The Dane then added that her competitive spirit was still very much alive, and that as she was still young enough to come back, she decided to go for it.
"I'm still young enough to give myself another chance, you only live once. Deep down, we will always carry that competitor spirit inside, for tennis or for something else, but you will never know if you don't try," she said.
