The novel technology was never used on clay courts before. It will be tested for the first time by the ATP and the WTA in Madrid. It will be employed on its main three courts and will run even in the qualifiers. The technology was developed by FOXTENN and was approved by the ATP back in November 2019.
Commenting on the decision and technology Mutua Madrilena Open director Feliciano Lopez said:
“We’re very proud to have the opportunity to use Electronic Line Calling at the Mutua Madrilena Open 2020. It has always been a hallmark of our tournament to innovate and lead the way, therefore the use of this technology reaffirms that spirit."
He further added:
“In addition, there is no doubt that it will provide significant extra help to the players. I am so happy about this huge development. It was something we needed on clay, and we’re very happy to have it at the Caja Magica. I would like to reiterate Madrid’s commitment to always being at the cutting edge of technology.”
Electronic Line Calling is not a novel technology in itself that has been present on the tour since 2006. However, it was never used on clay. That will be changed in Madrid this year and possibly on every clay surface moving forward.
