Novak Djokovic and
Stan Wawrinka's impressive tennis records are both on display in a statistic about hardcourt victories.
23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic has had a great run at this year's
US Open, only dropping two sets on his way to the final, where he will be hoping to win a fourth title at the New York major. The Serb fought back from 4-6, 4-6 in his third-round match against Laslo Djere before ousting ninth seed Taylor Fritz and rising talent Ben Shelton in straight sets.
Meanwhile, Wawrinka, who won the Slam in 2016, had a less successful time at Flushing Meadows this year, being defeated by sixth seed Jannik Sinner in the third round.
Impressive stat reveals strength of players
After Djokovic reached the US Open final, the Twitter page Relevant Tennis pointed out the tremendous success that the 36-year-old has on hard courts after winning the first set.
"Novak Djokovic is now 147-2 in Grand Slam matches played on hard courts after winning the first set," they wrote.
They then pointed out that both of the two matches where another player had come back from a set down to beat the Big Three member were won by Wawrinka. One of these times was in the final of the US Open in 2016, which the Swiss player won in four sets 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.
Wawrinka also achieved this feat two years earlier in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. The now 38-year-old ousted Djokovic in a five-set thriller, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7. Wawrinka went on to win the title in Melbourne that year.
Nevertheless, Djokovic has a substantial lead in their head-to-head of 21-6. He also won their last two meetings - in the Round of 32 at this year's Wimbledon and in the Round of 16 at the 2022 Rome Masters.
