Aryna Sabalenka has said that she will be focusing on herself rather than on whether or not she can usurp world No. 1
Iga Swiatek at the
US Open.
World No. 2 Sabalenka has missed out on a few chances to overtake Swiatek at the top of the WTA Ranking. The most prominent opportunity came at Wimbledon last month when Swiatek was defeated in the quarter-finals by Elina Svitolina.
As a result of this, Sabalenka just had to make the final in order to become world No. 1 for the first time in her career. However, the Australian Open champion just missed out, losing to Ons Jabeur in the semi-finals and staying as No. 2.
Sabalenka just wants to do her best in New York
As players now prepare for the final Grand Slam of the season at Flushing Meadows, Sabalenka has another chance to overtake Swiatek as the Polish player moves into her 74th week as world No. 1.
Despite this, the Belarusian has insisted that she is just focusing on her job of playing and winning matches.
"Well, I don't need to push it on the side because this is not something I'm really thinking during the tournament, during the matches. I mean, I know that I had and probably I have opportunity to become world No. 1, but there is still a lot of job to be done. I'm, like, focusing on myself more than on the ranking," she said.
The 25-year-old also added that her main aim is to play her best tennis at the tournament.
"I know that if I'll bring my best tennis, if I'll do my best, I know that I'm able to do that. I'm trying to shift my focus more on myself, on my game, on improving myself more," she continued.
Sabalenka will face Maryna Zanevska in her opening round at the US Open.
