Anna-Lena Friedsam had spent the last few years battling with various injuries, but the former World No.45 finally began to rediscover her form as the 2020 season progressed.

The German was undergoing a resurgence of sorts, as she tore through a succession of former Top 10 players at the 2020 Lyon Open en route to the final. However, she fell to Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in three entertaining sets.
Nonetheless, Friedsam announced her revival, having raced through the tournament unseeded. Furthermore, her impressive display showed that the 26-year old was indeed over the numerous injuries that had sidelined her career.
Friedsam's battle with injuries arose five years ago, when she developed worsening right shoulder pain during the 2016 season. After several hospital consultations and misdiagnosis, it was revealed that she had suffered a broken tendon in that shoulder.
Electing to have surgery that saw her out of action till September 2017, Friedsam hoped the worst was over. However, the pain returned four months later, leading to a second surgery on the same shoulder.
"It was hard a lot of the time, but I tried to look day by day and to make the best out of every day," says Friedsam. "This was the only thing that worked. But after the first surgery I wanted to get back as soon as possible, I was so impatient to come back - but after the second one I knew how long it takes and I was more relaxed. I gave the shoulder time - and my mind, as well."
On her hobbies
While sidelined, Friedsam rediscovered her passion for cooking. She used this time to hone her skills, creating dishes ranging from sweet potato waffles to Thai massaman curry, her personal favorite.
"I love all the fresh spices and ingredients and I like to cook it when I'm at home," Friedsam explains.
On her goals for the 2020 season
With the WTA season temporarily on hiatus, Friedsam has spent more time cooking. However, her goal for the year still remains, which is to reach the main draws of Grand Slams. Currently ranked at World No.106, the German may have surpassed that objective already.
"I want to get back to that point where I was in 2016. Step by step, I know I can play that tennis but it needs time and consistency." reveals Friedsam. "This is my main goal."
