Australian
tennis player
Nick Kyrgios has revealed the reason behind his Instagram
username "King Kyrgios.”
Kyrgios is
known for his controversial behavior both on and off the court, but has also
gained a large following due to his talent as a player. He was a finalist at
Wimbledon 2022.
The
nickname "King Kyrgios" was not given to him, but rather chosen by
the athlete himself when he created his Instagram account at the age of 10. In
a recent video, he revealed that he decided to use "@k1ngkyrg1os" as
his username.
"I
think I made my Instagram when I was about 10 years old, and that was my
handle. I guess I haven't changed it since. So, it just stayed around. And as I
was playing these tournaments and when I beat Federer, Djokovic, and Nadal for
the first time on my first try. I guess that kinda nickname stuck in tennis
world," the Aussie said.
"Tennis
fans started, you know, bringing signs and wearing shirts with King all over
it, and I guess it just stuck and kind of embraced my tennis career. It's
almost like a villain. That's just what it is," he added.
The former
world No. 13 has not played any official matches this year due to a knee
injury. Kyrgios will soon return to a court, but in an exhibition match against
the world No. 7
Holger Rune in Denmark on May 24th.
