After being defeated in the opening round of 2023 Wimbledon, Venus Williams also showed the changing of the guard in tennis with an interesting statistic confirmed.
As per Opta Ace, it is the first time since 1997 that neither of the Williams sisters, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer are in the second round at Wimbledon.
Federer of course last played the tournament in 2021, but for Nadal and also Serena Williams, their last appearance was in 2022.
Nadal withdrew against Nick Kyrgios in the semi-final, while Williams lost out to Harmony Tan.
Venus Williams only played in the doubles last year, but came out of a hiatus again to play at the age of 43 before losing to Svitolina.
Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are the final players who have been synonymous with the tournament so with this statistic it shows that the end of an era is here.
Especially too with players like Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek now taking the mantle as World No.1 in the ATP and WTA respectively.
