New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers showed his support for
Novak Djokovic, saying his success at this year's
US Open shows he should have been allowed to participate last season.
23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic was unable to participate in the 2022 New York major because he was barred from entering the US at the time. This was because he was unvaccinated against COVID-19, and at the time the country banned those who weren't American citizens and who were not vaccinated from traveling to the country.
As the pandemic has now ended, these restrictions have been dropped, meaning Djokovic returned to Flushing Meadows and has been playing like he had never been away, reaching the final where he will face Daniil Medvedev. Meanwhile, Rodgers has shown his support for Djokovic regarding last year's ban.
Rodgers shares bizarre story highlight
Rodgers was in attendance for Djokovic's fourth-round match against Borna Gojo, which the Serb won in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.
The American shared his excitement to watch the Big Three member play live, writing on his Instagram story:
"Bucket list [check]. Being able to witness the greatness of @djokernole in person at #arthurashestadium."
Rodgers also appeared to take a dig at the US Open's partner, the pharmacy giant Moderna who created a COVID-19 vaccine. A board displaying the company's name was visible in the photo of Djokovic that Rodgers shared to Instagram, so the latter crossed it out and wrote:
"[GOAT] #novaxdjokovic."
Rodgers says banning Djokovic was 'ridiculous'
Moreover, Rodgers backed Djokovic further by adding that it was, in his opinion, a 'ridiculous' decision to ban him from the tournament last year.
"Well, I am a big fan of Novak. And I got to see him in person. I took that photo and then realized that there was a little Moderna sign in the background.
"Novak is one of the most fit athletes in the world. And I think anybody looking at this situation realizes how ridiculous it was to not allow him into the country -- with the level of fitness and the way he takes care of his body. Like him, I care about health, and I was having a little bit of fun with it," he said.
