The
schedule for Day Four of Roland Garros French Open 2025 has been released, marking the start of the second round with the top-half of the WTA draw and the bottom-half of the ATP. The day will be led by the defending champions:
Iga Swiatek will go for another win as she faces
Emma Raducanu, while
Carlos Alcaraz will take on Hungary's Fabian Marozsan.
Also taking to the court will be world No. 1
Aryna Sabalenka, Paris 2024 Olympic gold medalist
Zheng Qinwen, and recent Madrid Open champion
Casper Ruud. Local fans will also have their own celebration, with
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard returning to the court as a main attraction.
Philippe Chatrier Stadium
A very interesting match to open the day will feature recent Rome Open champion
Jasmine Paolini, a 2024 tournament finalist, facing the always tricky Ajla Tomljanovic (No. 71) at the start of the day. Paolini has 7 consecutive wins on clay courts and overcame a tough debut against Yue Yuan. This time she will face the Australian, a player with a deceptive ranking who, when physically fit, can complicate things for any opponent.
After that match, it will be Carlos Alcaraz's (No. 2) turn to return to the Central Court to face Hungary's Fabian Marozsan (No. 56), who upset him a couple of years ago. Back in 2023, Alcaraz was the favorite in Rome, and the Hungarian surprised him with a straight-sets victory in only the third round. This time, Alcaraz will need to be prepared for an opponent who is comfortable in these conditions and already knows how to trouble the Spaniard.
To close the daytime session on the central court, four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek (No. 5) will have a blockbuster – arguably the most significant match of the tournament's second round – against former US Open champion Emma Raducanu (No. 41). The Brit has found consistency in recent months and is not an easy opponent to face so early in the tournament. Nevertheless, the "Queen of Clay" will be ready to go for her 23rd consecutive win at the French Open and continue her quest to revalidate the title and claim her sixth major title.
The night session will be closed by Denmark's
Holger Rune (No. 10) against American Emilio Nava (No. 137). The 22-year-old overcame a tough debut against former top-10 Roberto Bautista Agut (6-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2), and this time he is a huge favorite against an opponent who has never surpassed the second round in a major, who isn't particularly comfortable on clay courts, and who has limited experience in these types of stadiums. It will be a good opportunity for Rune to continue gaining rhythm, and it will be up to him not to be surprised.
Rune won the Barcelona Open title a month ago by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final. He is the only one to have beaten the Spaniard this year on clay-courts.
Suzanne Lenglen Stadium
The second most important stadium at Roland Garros, Suzanne Lenglen, will kick off the day with Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen (No. 7) back for another challenge. She overcame a tough first round against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, a former French Open finalist, an opponent who doesn't offer much rhythm in rallies and aggressively seeks points. This time, Zheng faces clay-specialist Emiliana Arango (No. 85), a player much more comfortable with long rallies than Pavlyuchenkova, who will demand that the Chinese player take more risks with her shots to seize the initiative and be more aggressive.
After the women's match, it will be Casper Ruud's (No. 8) turn on court against a tricky opponent in Portugal's Nuno Borges (No. 41). Borges has been consistent over the last year, with his clay results being a major driving force. The Portuguese player has never beaten a top-10 opponent and will play without any pressure against Ruud, who carries the responsibility of advancing through rounds as one of the favorites for the later stages of the tournament.
The third match will feature local favorite Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (No. 37) against Damir Dzumhur (No. 69). The Frenchman was pushed hard in his first round against Zizou Bergs, forced to play from the baseline and engage in longer rallies than he's accustomed to, but he managed to get the job done. With the crowd on his side, he appears to be the favorite, but he'll face a clay-court specialist who will surely force Mpetshi into even more extended exchanges. With all the pressure on Mpetshi Perricard, the Bosnian will certainly have something to say in the match, and the conditions will be favorable for a potential upset.
Closing the day's action at Lenglen Stadium will be none other than world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka against Switzerland's Jil Teichmann (No. 97). The left-hander holds two clay-court titles and reached the fourth round of Roland Garros back in 2022. Sabalenka should not face major problems against her opponent, especially given her incredibly high level in her debut, where she conceded just one game against Kamila Rakhimova.
Sabalenka dropped just one game in her debut against Kamila Rakhimova
Other Must-Watch Matches
Outside the main stadiums, several big names will be on court looking to secure their spot in the third round. On the men's side, Lorenzo Musetti (No. 8) is a significant player to watch as he faces Daniel Elahi Galan (No. 122), another clay-court specialist. The Italian has shown in recent months that he's capable of great things on this surface, making an early exit from the tournament difficult to imagine. The Italian holds a strong favoritism against the Colombian lucky loser.
Also taking the court will be former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina (No. 11) against a tricky opponent in 17-year-old Iva Jovic (No. 129). The Kazakh won the Strasbourg title just days ago and maintained her level in her Paris debut, overcoming Julia Riera in three sets. This will be a good test for Rybakina, who already defeated Jovic earlier this year in the second round of the Australian Open.
On the men's side, other notable names hitting the court this day include Stefanos Tsitsipas against Matteo Gigante, Tommy Paul against Marton Fucsovics, and Alexei Popyrin against Alejandro Tabilo.
Among the women, the protagonists will include Elina Svitolina against Anna Bondar, Diana Shnaider against Dayana Yastremska, and the 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko against Caroline Dolehide.
