Peyton Stearns has joked about changing her outfit mid-match at the
US Open, showcasing different brands each time.
The American had a good run at the last Grand Slam of the year in New York, reaching the Round of 16 where she faced off against reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova on Louis Armstrong.
However, the 21-year-old was ultimately ousted by the ninth seed, who won the match 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2. The match has been remembered for a more bizarre reason, though, as fans expressed their confusion around Stearns' outfit change halfway through.
Stearns wears two separate brands in same match
Initially, the American was wearing a blue Lululemon outfit, before changing into cherry-colored Nike clothing. One fan who noticed the change jokingly asked if Stearns had signed with Nike during the bathroom break.
"Did Nike sign Peyton Stearns in the toilet break, istg she was wearing Lululemon in the first two sets. That ain't just a different coloured dress it's a whole new brand!" they wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Stearns responded to the fans' post by pointing out that she was free to wear whatever brands she wanted due to the fact that she currently doesn't have a sponsor for her sportswear.
"Unsponsored life", she jokingly responded, followed by a sighing-face emoji.
The world No. 59 has managed to secure a racquet sponsor with Wilson, and her run to the fourth round of the US Open could help her on her way to finding a sponsor for her clothes and shoes, although she would then probably have to stick with the same outfit throughout the match.
Indeed, well-known tennis coach and former World No. 1 in doubles
Rennae Stubbs commented on Stearns' post calling for someone to sponsor her.
"Someone sponsor this kid!! Come on!," she wrote.
Moreover, tennis journalist Steve Weissman wrote:
"That’ll change soon.. great tournament Peyton!"
