Victoria Azarenka was involved in a hilarious mishap with her doubles partner Beatriz Haddad Maia during their match at the US Open.

Azarenka and Haddad Maia are having a successful run together in the women's doubles event at the last Grand Slam of the year. Although they faced disappointment in singles, with both players being ousted in the second round, they have reached the quarter-finals of this discipline.

Along the way, the pair defeated Hungarian duo Anna Bondar and Timea Babos in straight sets, before the fourth-seeded pair Desirae Krawczyk and Demi Schuurs withdrew from their second-round match, seeing them into the third round. There, they faced fifteenth seeds Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi, who they flew past 6-2, 6-0.

Hilarious scenes as Azarenka's shot goes awry

However, their journey has not been without incident, as a hilarious mishap occurred during their latest match. The two pairs were engaged in a rally in the opening set.

Azarenka was back at the baseline while Haddad Maia was closer to the net. The former had plenty of time to return the ball after their opponents hit it high, and she was clearly aiming for an impressive and powerful shot as she scuffled further and further backwards.

However, as the ball came down, she ended up accidentally hitting the ball into her teammate, evoking laughter from the crowd and players alike.

'She's your teammate!'

The commentators also saw the funny side.

"Vika, what are you doing? She's your teammate!" cried one Sky Sports commentator amusedly.

Meanwhile, plenty of tennis fans took to social media to express their reactions to the scenes.

"Haha! They both went on a spree after that not allowing their opponents any more games!" wrote one, referring to the fact that the Belarusian and the Brazilian went on to dominate the match.

"That’s amazing! Nothing like getting hit by a tennis ball to bring out your best tennis," replied The Tennis Letter, followed by a laugh-till-crying emoji.

The pair will go on to face Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva in the quarter-finals of the US Open.
