Coco Gauff is set to lock horns with
Mirra Andreeva in a second-round battle of the teens at the
US Open.
Home favorite Gauff is still only 19 years old, but is already a well-known name on the
WTA Tour.
She entered this year’s Grand
Slam at Flushing Meadows as the sixth seed, fresh off a hugely successful North
American hard-court swing where she won both the WTA 500
DC Open and the WTA
1000
Cincinnati Open.
Meanwhile, 16-year-old Andreeva
is a newer name on the Tour but has already got people talking after she
reached the fourth round of this year’s
Wimbledon. Along the way, the Russian defeated tenth seed Barbora
Krejcikova and twenty-second seed Anastasia Potapova before losing to 25th seed
Madison Keys. She was the
youngest player to reach this milestone since Gauff herself did the same in 2019 at 15 years old.
Gauff leads head-to-head
The two young players have only faced each other on one occasion so far, when they met in the third round of this year's French Open. It was a tight first set that Andreeva took on tiebreak, but ultimately it was Gauff who emerged victorious.
The American fought back hard to take the next two sets, winning 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-1, giving her a 1-0 lead in her head-to-head with the world No. 63.
Gauff comes into this match on the back of a dramatic victory against
Laura Siegemund in the first round of the US Open. Despite the German player's efforts to make the match difficult for the world No. 6, Gauff won in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Andreeva faced qualifier Olivia Gadecki. Things started out worryingly for her, as she only won one game in the opening set, but the Russian was able to turn it around to achieve a comeback victory 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Odds are in Gauff's favor
The odds are firmly in the home player's favor, but it is expected to be a close match.
Both players have already shown their fighting spirit in their opening rounds, and Andreeva has demonstrated that she is capable of taking a set off the American. However, Gauff's improvements over the summer and the momentum from her subsequent success should help her prevail in this match.
