Iga Swiatek has condemned the portrayal of scenes with her psychologist Daria Abramowicz in Netflix's 'Break Point', saying they were taken out of context and caused the latter to receive a lot of hate from tennis fans.
World No. 1 Swiatek has made it to the semi-finals of the
Cincinnati Open after defeating Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the quarter-finals yesterday.
Speaking in a recent press conference at the
WTA 1000 event, the 22-year-old called out the editing choices in the Netflix docu-series 'Break Point'. The show follows some of the top-ranked players as they travel to Grand Slams, as well as ATP and WTA tournaments. The last five episodes were released in June this year.
Swiatek says sarcasm was taken out of context
A scene between the Polish player and her longtime psychologist Abramowicz received criticism from tennis fans on social media.
In the scene, Swiatek was getting a haircut, but when the hairdresser asked her what length she would like, Abramowicz jumped in to answer for the four-time Grand Slam champion, leading Swiatek to respond with a blunt comment. This led to a lot of backlash from fans, as they called out Abramowicz for not letting Swiatek choose her own style.
However, Swiatek stressed that the scene was taken out of context, as they had no influence over Netflix's editing choices. Moreover, she said that her blunt response to Abramowicz was supposed to be sarcasm.
"There were some things that I thought they edited it, and people kind of misunderstood sometimes few situations in the episode. We already kind of spoke to Netflix about these things. I wish it could be done a little bit differently. When we watched before the premier, we couldn't have any influence on how they edited some stuff.
"I was sarcastic and I said I'm not going to adjust my haircut to tennis because I tend to, few years back, cut my hair really short. When I was playing, it was falling here, and I couldn't really do anything about it. My hair is really chaotic. It needs to be perfect, because if not, I can't really control it. Daria reminded me about that," she said.
Swiatek calls out hate from fans
Swiatek continued by calling out those who had hated on her psychologist, saying there is too much hate in the sport.
"There was a lot of hate after the episode came out. That's another thing that kind of convinced me that I don't need that right now at this stage of my career. Overall there is too much hate. I think every player would say it," she said.
Swiatek added that she would be careful not to be sarcastic in public as people were so quick to judge.
"I realize that I shouldn't use sarcasm in the public arena because people sometimes are not understanding, and they are just hating, I wish people wouldn't judge so much," she added.
