The GOAT debate is often a fixture of tennis especially given that in the Open Era, there have been multiple players loved by a myriad of fans and ordinarily one stands out among the rest. But for
Novak Djokovic, he admits it isn't on him to decide whether he is.
Djokovic who touched down in Perth ahead of starting his 2024 season with a rare pre Grand Slam outing at the United Cup was quizzed on it and the 24-time Grand Slam champion who has dominated the sport over the last five years gave a sharp and thoughtful three point answer before giving his own take.
He said from an arrogance point of view, he would say that. But also that he can show off he is humble by not saying he is the GOAT before actually giving his viewpoint that he respects other eras and opinions and will leave it to others to decide as ever.
It is a debate which has been banded around by those in the sport for a long time with each player having a different perspective, but Djokovic has always remained of the viewpoint that is up to others to have opinions and not him. “We can suggest three answers,” Djokovic told L’Equipe when asked if he is the GOAT.
“The first: ‘I am the best.’ If we think that, some will say: ‘he is arrogant! He does not respect the others’. The second answer is to say: ‘I don’t think I’m the greatest,’ showing off that I’m totally humble, which is possible.
“And the third: ‘I am who I am, I am proud of what I have accomplished, but I respect other eras and all opinions and I leave the GOAT debate to the others.’ The third is my answer.”
