With the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe, resources are being stretched in an attempt to combat it's effects.
The
WTA has officially
suspended all activities and tournaments till May 2, citing recommendations from the CDC and local health organizations. However, numerous WTA stars have been active in giving back to their communities during this COVID-19 outbreak.
Reigning US Open Champion Bianca Andreescu
recently donated a signed racket to
Athletes for Relief, an organization that is raising money and awareness for COVID-19 relief. A donation of at least $25 enters a participant into a sweepstakes in which they could win players' signed memorabilia. All proceeds will then go to helping local non-profits in areas that have a high number of individuals who have been directly affected by the pandemic.
American Caty McNally, who is frequently
Coco Gauff's
doubles partner, also donated a signed racket to the same organization.
Speaking of Gauff, the 16-year old celebrated her birthday by
initiating a Facebook fundraiser to support UNICEF's COVID-19 global response efforts. China's Qiang Wang also
made a large donation aimed at assisting the hospitals in Wuhan that have been affected by the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, World No.2
Simona Halep is committed to assisting her country in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. The Romanian has pledged to donate funds that will be used to purchase necessary equipment by the medical authorities in Bucharest and Constanta.
“I encourage everyone who can to contribute to the joint efforts to combat this virus." Halep said in a video message. "In the meantime, let us all take care of ourselves, be responsible and stay positive!”
