USTA released a statement regarding the re-scheduling of the 2020 Roland Garros which should be played just a week after the US Open.
Yesterday, The President of the FFT, Bernard Giudicelli announced that
2020 Roland Garros will be played from 20th September to 4th October 2020. These measures were taken due to a disease COVID-19 that is threatening the world at the moment.
With a 2020 US Open starting on 24th August and ending on 13th September,
Roland Garros should begin just a week after the US Open. However, this can bring a lot of problems for both players and organizers. Grand Slams are definitely the most demanding tournaments regarding both the mental and physical parts. Having 2 Grand Slam tournaments within 5 weeks can be a problem for many players.
It also needs to be said, that both of these tournaments are played on 2 different continents. So any player that wins on Sunday in Flushing Meadows, and will have some responsibilities regarding his victory on Monday, will fly to Paris earliest on Tuesday. Arriving on Wednesday and battling a jet lag, a player will need to prepare for his Monday, possibly also 5-set, match.
In their statement, USTA says: "The USTA is continuing to plan for the 2020 US Open and is not at this time implementing any changes to the schedule. These are unprecedented times, though, and we are assessing all of our options, including the possibility of moving the tournament to a later date."
"At a time when the world is coming together, we recognize that such a decision should not be made unilaterally. And, therefore, the USTA would only do so in full consultation with the other Grand Slam tournaments, the WTA and ATP, the ITF and our partners, including the Laver Cup."
