The WTA 250
Iasi Open is set to take
place between July 21 and July 26 on the clay courts of the Romanian city. The
tournament will offer a total prize money of $267,082, with a draw of 32
players who could earn 250 points and more than $30,000 for the champion.
The notable absence will be 2-time
champion
Ana Bogdan, winner of the only two editions the tournament has had at
the WTA Tour level. The current Romanian No. 3 withdrew after suffering an
injury. Additionally, Kazakh player
Yulia Putintseva, who was confirmed in the
draw, also withdrew.
However, there will be other stars,
in a draw led by the teenager
Mirra Andreeva. The 17-year-old returns to clay
courts for the first time since her appearance in the semifinals of the French
Open. Iasi will be an opportunity to move past her poor grass swing (0-2) and
prepare for the Olympic Games next week.
Also notable in the draw are former
Roland Garros semifinalist
Martina Trevisan and former Wimbledon semifinalist
Tatjana Maria. The eyes of the local fans will be on
Jaqueline Cristian (No.
66) and the rising 19-year-old star Anca Todoni (No. 118). There will be 6
Romanians in the main draw, with more potentially joining from the qualifiers.
