World No.1,
Aryna Sabalenka, has confirmed she won't play the
China Open, which takes place between 24 September - 5 October 2025 in Beijing. She has not recovered sufficiently from a minor injury suffered at the US Open.
Sabalenka often post winning a major title doesn't play an awful lot in the weeks that follow choosing time off or in this case is injured and so she will likely be managing her schedule before a busy latter half of the year including the WTA Finals. But she won't play at the
China Open.
"Aryna has not fully recovered from the injury she sustained during the US Open, [and] will miss the 2025 China Open," organisers
announced on Wednesday.
"I am going to focus on recovery and strive to quickly return to the court at 100 percent," she added as per Weibo, the social media platform used in China. "I can't wait to see my Chinese fans soon. look forward to returning to Beijing next year."
The Entry List still currently includes many of the top stars including Iga Swiatek who plays in the Korea Open this week as well as Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. But it now won't feature Sabalenka who has taken a different tact when it comes to the end of her season. She is next scheduled to play at the Wuhan Open next month as her next tournament.
Having already qualified for the WTA Finals at the turn of the year, it is very much pick and choose for a lot of the top names going forward including Sabalenka albeit she has more of an issue that the World No.1 could yet be under threat in the coming months to Iga Swiatek who unlike last year is taking a bit more of a heavier schedule. Of course mainly due to the fact she is not banned from the sport this time around. She leads Swiatek by 2,077 points in the battle to seal the year end World No.1 spot with both entered into Riyadh. Gauff is the defending champion at the China Open.
