Once touted as a future World No.1,
Holger Rune has thus far failed to live up to expectations. Nonetheless, the Danish star has had moments of brilliance, which has prompted former French Open finalist
Alex Corretja to claim Rune can still win a Grand Slam title during his career.
Rune burst into the limelight in 2022, when he defeated the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic in the final to win the biggest title of his career at the Paris Masters. This catapulted the Danish youngster into the ATP Top 10, with Rune being granted an alternate spot at the year-ending ATP Finals.
After climbing to a career-high ranking of World No.4 the following year, Rune would maintain a good standing in the top 15. However, the 22-year old would fall just short of staying competitive with the top players in the game.
Rune has underperformed at Grand Slam events, with his best performance being quarterfinal appearances at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2023. Despite underperforming at the big stage, Corretja believes Rune has what it takes to add a major title to his resume.
Progress will be slow but very possible, says Corretja
In an interview with Punto de Break, Corretja spoke on Rune's potential and the young Danish stars chances of competing with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to win a Grand Slam title.
"Although he has achieved excellent results, I believe he has not yet expressed all his potential," began the retired tennis pro. "He is still missing a few pieces to complete the puzzle. He needs to better understand who he is, both on and off the court. What is important is that he analyzes the way he trains, how he competes on the court, and how he reacts in difficult moments. He also needs to study his opponents better. Holger (Rune) has a very strong, unique personality.
"He is a true fighter, he works hard and he is hungry for results. He has already been among the world's top ten players and he has won a Masters 1000 (Paris-Bercy 2022), we do not forget that. But, despite all this, he can do even more. He can still grow. I sincerely hope he will be successful, because I like his style of play. He brings something different to the court, and tennis needs players like him with his energy.
"But to go far in the Grand Slams, you need to find a certain continuity, a certain balance. He still needs to discover how to achieve this. I see no reason why he couldn't win a Grand Slam. If he manages to put everything in place, he will be able to fight for major titles in the coming years."
