Barbora Krejcikova wins first WTA title at Internationaux de Strasbourg

Barbora Krejcikova won her first WTA title at the Internationaux de Strasbourg defeating Sorana Cirstea 6-3 6-3 in the final.

The 25-year-old Czech player finally won her maiden title at the Internationaux de Strasbourg defeating Sorana Cirstea in the final. Krejcikova is the former doubles number one and current doubles number 7 who established herself as a doubles players first. She has won 5 grand slams in doubles but never won a title in the singles.

She played two finals before today and she lost both. Her singles breakout came last year at the French Open where she reached the 4th round. Days before the start of 2021 Roland Garros Krejcikova won her first maiden title in Strasbourg.

She played a strong event all week long defeating players like Dodin, Garcia, Alexandrova, Niemeier and Cirstea in the final. The match featured a lot of broken serves (11 in total) in the 18 games played. Krejcikova was more composed on her own serves as she hit 3 aces compared to Cirstea who hit none but committed 10 double faults.

After the match, Krejcikova said that she got a text from Jana Novotna’s former coach telling her that Strasbourg was Jana’s 1st clay title. Novotna was her coach before she passed. “He said, ‘I hope I’m not going to stress you out. I said, ‘If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.”

And it truly was meant to be. It's a title that is long overdue but Krejcikova has been a standout performer in 2021 having reached the Dubai final earlier in the year where she lost to Muguruza.
