After being unbeaten for close to three months,
Iga Swiatek loses twice in 20 days as
Beatriz Haddad Maia proved better in Toronto 6-4 3-6 7-5.
Oh, what a match this was from both of these players. It was a pretty well contested one and it saw Beatriz Haddad Maia keep rising on the biggest stage. The Brazilian produced a strong and composed effort to outplay Iga Swiatek in the crucial moments of this match and win it.
The match started well for both but Swiatek looked a bit unsure as she faced a break point in her 2nd service game. She saved that one but lost her serve not long after that and had to save more in the next service game. Haddad Maia kept playing her game and cruised to a 6-4 finish without allowing a single break point to Swiatek.
The 2nd set was a closely contested set but this time around Swiatek finally won all the crucial rallies. Both players had chances in this one and Haddad Maia had a huge chance early in the 2nd set when Swiatek looked shaky but she didn't take it. It was 6-3 for the Polish player and we went into the 3rd set. Swiatek looked to be rolling when she opened the final one with a break but she gave it right back.
Swiatek fell behind 2-4 after Haddad Maia started playing much better but the Pole battled back to make it 4-4. She continued to struggle though, especially on her serve giving Beatriz chance after chance and the Brazilian took her 4th match point to seal it.
