The second-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia won her Portoroz opener against the very solid Clara Tauson who gave the Brazilian some trouble 7-6(4) 6-3. Haddad Maia is enjoying a breakout year but she's not slowing down. Another solid performance and another solid win over a player that can and will beat you if you give her the chance. The start of this match certainly proved it would be a competitive match.
The Brazilian took the early 2-1 lead but gave it right back. Eventually, she took another lead but dropped it when serving for the set. She broke once more for the 6-5 but once again failed to close it out. She finally did so in the tiebreak taking it 7-4.
In the second set Haddad Maia jumped out to an early lead but she actually gave it back after falling out of rhythm. A MTO by Tauson was to blame but soon enough, Beatriz continued with where she left off and finished off the match 6-3.
A good start for her at an event she she hopes to win another trophy.
