Belinda Bencic defeated Donna Vekic 7-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals at the US Open and will play in the first semifinals at the Grand Slam.
In year 2014 Bencic was just 17 years old and got already into the quarterfinals at the US Open, but failed to succeed. This year, world no.12 wanted to fix this failure in the match against Vekic.
Already in 2014, when Bencic had gone so far at the Grand Slam, everyone knew that this
player has some real potential. Bencic reached the 14th place in the WTA ranking as an 18-year-old in 2015, but then struggled with injuries and fell to 74th.
This year, after winning the title in Dubai, she performed well in Indian Wells and continues to do so at the US Open. After winning over Minella, Cornet, Kontaveit, who withdrew and a
surprising win over the world no.1 Osaka, she fought for the semi-finals against
Donna Vekic.
And it was Vekic, who had the first chance to win the 1st set, as she took the opponent's serve at 4-4 and had the lead of 5-4 and served to win the set. However, she did not handle it well, Bencic took her broken service back and won in the tie-break 7-5.
In the second set Swiss with Slovak roots managed to take the opponent's serve twice and won the set 6-3.
In the next round she will meet the winner of the match between Bianca Andreescu and Elise Mertens, who will play a quarterfinal match today during the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
