Aryna Sabalenka fist pumps during win.
The quarter-final stage at Indian Wells produced a mix of expected progress and a notable upset, as Aryna Sabalenka, Linda Noskova, Elina Svitolina and Elena Rybakina secured their places in the final four of the WTA 1000 event in California.
Sabalenka overcame Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, Noskova ended qualifier Talia Gibson’s run, while Rybakina defeated Jessica Pegula in straight sets. The biggest surprise of the day came as Svitolina eliminated two-time champion Iga Swiatek.
The results set up two intriguing semi-final clashes. World No. 1 Sabalenka will face Czech teenager Noskova, while Svitolina advances to meet Rybakina. Sabalenka continues a consistent record at the tournament with a fourth consecutive semi-final appearance, while Svitolina builds on her strong early-season form after finishing runner-up in Dubai. Rybakina also continues a strong run against Pegula, extending a growing head-to-head advantage.

Aryna Sabalenka def. Victoria Mboko 7-6(0), 6-4

Aryna Sabalenka was pushed for long stretches before defeating Victoria Mboko 7-6(0), 6-4 to secure her place in the Indian Wells semi-finals. The world No. 1 faced a determined challenge from the Canadian, particularly in a tightly contested opening set where neither player managed to establish a clear advantage on return.
Both players created early opportunities but struggled to convert. Through the opening six games alone, each had three break points, yet the serves held firm. Mboko showed aggressive intent from the baseline and matched Sabalenka’s power, forcing the top seed to remain patient during extended exchanges.
The set ultimately moved into a tie-break after twelve games without a break. There, Sabalenka’s experience proved decisive. The Belarusian dominated the breaker, winning seven consecutive points to seal the opening set 7-0. A sharply angled backhand winner helped create six set points before Mboko ended the set with a backhand error.
Momentum shifted early in the second set when Sabalenka secured the first break for a 3-2 lead after Mboko sent a backhand long. From that moment the top seed managed the match efficiently. Mboko continued to fight, earning break opportunities in the eighth game, but Sabalenka saved them to maintain control.
Serving at 5-4, Sabalenka closed out the match after Mboko missed another backhand, completing a victory in one hour and 51 minutes. The win improves Sabalenka’s record in 2026 to 15-1 and moves her into a fourth consecutive Indian Wells semi-final, where she will face Linda Noskova.

Linda Noskova def. Talia Gibson 6-2, 4-6, 6-2

Linda Noskova advanced to the semi-finals after defeating qualifier Talia Gibson 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in a match that swung significantly between sets. The Czech controlled the opening set with authority before Gibson mounted a response that forced a deciding third.
Noskova began the match strongly, applying immediate pressure on Gibson’s serve. The Australian struggled to establish rhythm early, allowing the 14th seed to build a comfortable advantage. Noskova’s baseline consistency and ability to step inside the court allowed her to dictate rallies as she moved quickly through the opening set.
Gibson responded in the second set by improving her serving numbers and taking advantage of a brief lapse from Noskova. An early break gave the Australian control, and she maintained the lead with solid service games. Both players were dominant behind their first serve during the set, with Noskova winning 95% of those points and Gibson 84%.
The deciding set, however, returned firmly in Noskova’s favour. She held comfortably before breaking early to establish a 2-0 lead, capitalising on Gibson being forced into multiple second serves. Noskova’s aggressive return positioning allowed her to control baseline exchanges.
From there the Czech maintained steady service games and extended the lead to 4-1. She eventually closed the match after just 31 minutes in the final set. Noskova finished with 13 aces and won 78% of first-serve points, underlining the effectiveness of her delivery. The victory sends Noskova into her second career WTA 1000 semi-final, where she will face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Elina Svitolina def. Iga Swiatek 6-2, 4-6, 6-4

Elina Svitolina produced the biggest result of the day by defeating Iga Swiatek 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the Indian Wells semi-finals for the second time in her career. The Ukrainian capitalised on an erratic serving performance from the Polish star to establish early control of the match.
Swiatek struggled from the outset, committing several double faults and losing her opening service games. Svitolina quickly built a commanding 3-0 lead and continued to pressure Swiatek’s second serve. Breaks dominated the opening set as the Ukrainian maintained the advantage and eventually served it out comfortably.
Swiatek responded in the second set by raising her level. The world No. 2 built a 4-1 lead before Svitolina recovered one of the breaks to level at 4-4. However, Swiatek steadied her game at the critical moment, holding serve before capitalising on errors in the tenth game to force a deciding set.
The final set proved far tighter. Both players held comfortably through the opening games, with neither facing break points until late in the set. Svitolina continued to serve efficiently, landing 70% of first serves overall during the match and winning 68% of those points.
The decisive moment arrived at 4-4 when Svitolina earned the first break opportunity of the set and converted to move ahead. Serving at 5-4, the Ukrainian relied on solid first serves to close the match and complete the upset. Svitolina now advances to the semi-finals where she will face Elena Rybakina as she looks to reach her first Indian Wells final.

Elena Rybakina def. Jessica Pegula 6-1, 7-6(4)

Elena Rybakina defeated Jessica Pegula 6-1, 7-6(4) to secure another victory over the American and book her place in the semi-finals. The Kazakh controlled the opening set with authority before surviving a stronger challenge from Pegula in the second.
Rybakina established early dominance by breaking Pegula’s serve to move ahead 3-1. From that point she dictated the tempo with her powerful serving and flat groundstrokes. Pegula struggled to generate pressure on return, allowing Rybakina to extend the lead and close the set comfortably.
The second set unfolded very differently. Pegula improved her level significantly, finding a break to move ahead 3-1 as Rybakina’s first-serve percentage briefly dipped. The American held firmly and looked on course to force a deciding set.
However, Rybakina responded with composure. She recovered the break and held through several tense service games, including saving three break points at 4-4 to keep the set level. The match ultimately moved into a tie-break as both players held under pressure.
In the breaker, Rybakina maintained the steadier level. Her serve and aggressive baseline play allowed her to edge ahead and eventually close the match 7-4. She finished with seven aces and won 73% of points behind her first serve. The victory marks Rybakina’s third consecutive win over Pegula, extending their head-to-head to 5-3. She will now face Elina Svitolina in the semi-finals.
