Bianca Andreescu dropped out of the top 100 in the latest WTA Ranking update after five months without competing. At 23, Andreescu has grappled with injuries over the past few seasons and is set to continue descending in the rankings even two months after her return.
The Canadian suffered a severe ankle injury at the Miami Open last year, and in the latter months of the year, she was sidelined from the Tour due to a back injury. Commenting in mid-December 2014, she stated, "Sadly I won't be at the
Australian Open. Right now I'm looking at (returning) after the Australian Open or the American Tour, so maybe Indian Wells."
"Right now, I'm still dealing with my back injury. It is getting better every single day. I'm doing everything I can to get there as fast as possible, but sadly these things take some time. My frustration level has definitely been very high. It's the bone right? So it takes a lot of time," said the Canadian.
The former US Open champion entered the top 100 for the first time in January 2019 and has since exited the exclusive group for four weeks in 2022. Andreescu played her last match at the Canadian Open in early August 2023, losing in the first round to Camila Giorgi (3-6, 2-6).
Bianca Andreescu's Career Goals
At just 18 years old, the Canadian made an impressive breakthrough at the highest level of the WTA Tour in 2019, particularly in major tournaments. Andreescu clinched three titles, defeating former world No. 1 players and multiple Grand Slam champions. In Indian Wells, she triumphed over Angelique Kerber (6-4, 3-6, 6-4), and at the Canadian Open, she bested Serena Williams (3-1, ret.). The most remarkable achievement came at the 2019 US Open, where she won her first Grand Slam against the same opponent, Williams (6-3, 7-5), propelling her to a career-best ranking of world No. 4.
Since capturing the title at Flushing Meadows, Andreescu has only reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam once. In her last 10 participations, she faced first-round exits twice, second-round losses four times, and third-round defeats thrice.
