Italian tennis player Camila Giorgi has reportedly retired from the sport, that too in a rather mysterious manner with a supposed disappearance being the latest mystery. The 32-year-old recently played in the Miami Open in March where her journey came to an end as she lost in the round of 64 to the current world number one Iga Swiatek with a score of 6-1, 6-1.
Interestingly, after that, authorities lost contact with Giorgi and she was untraceable for a very long period of time, sparking rumours about her safety as well. However, as per the latest report, she has been retired from the sport after her name appeared in the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) retired players list. The list mentioned that the Macerata-born star retired from the sport two days ago on May 07.
It is not clear what was the primary reason behind her decision as it was clear that she was not struggling with injury before calling it quits as well. A report online stated that the player is currently outside Italy and her decision to retire is probably down to a false certification of the Covid-19 vaccination and the potential issues surrounding that. Supposedly the WTA have tried to contact her to no avail as per Corriere della Sera and supposedly she has disconnected all of her phones. So the plot thickens in terms of her odd disappearance not only from tennis but the world seemingly.
Giorgi finished her career with four WTA titles. Her biggest triumph came in 2021 when she lifted the WTA 1000 event — the Canadian Open — where she defeated the Czech Republic’s Karolína Pliskova in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-5. In Grand Slams, her best appearance came at Wimbledon in 2018 when she was defeated by the former world number one Serena Williams with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
