After it was mooted that childhood coach, Nick Cavaday would link up with Emma Raducanu ahead of the 2024 Australian Open, he has been seen on court in Melbourne with the former US Open champion and has been confirmed as her new coach at least for during this swing.
Raducanu's coaching merry go round has been well documented with the Brit being heavily criticised at some junctures after ditching Andrew Richardson following the US Open win. Many high profile coaches including Dmitry Tursunov, Torben Beltz and Sebastian Sachs have came and went amid injury problems at many points. But she has gone back to a familiar face and one she has known since childhood.
After having Jane O'Donoghue by her side in Auckland where she reached the second round losing to Elina Svitolina, Cavaday has found his way over to Australia and is practicing ahead of their charity match with Naomi Osaka on Tuesday. A previous head coach of Loughborough's LTA Academy until April of last year, he has been working with Raducanu at the National Tennis Centre in recent months.
"I've known Nick since I was 10 years old and he was helping me out the last week at the NTC [National Tennis Centre]. Before that the LTA helped me a ton," Raducanu said while in Auckland.
Both have according to BBC Sport had the understanding to work together post Australian Open albeit the decision to work with Cavaday was only supposedly made last week. As a result, it will likely depend on her results in Melbourne whether the union will continue but in going back to her childhood coach, it shows that she is going back to basics instead of hiring a renowned coach like she did during her success. She is also likely to play Mirra Andreeva after signing up to play Kooyong.
