An accusation has surfaced against Coco Gauff’s sponsor New Balance over her ‘extremely tight and revealing’ outfits. The American ended her season on a high note by securing the title at the WTA Finals, though that wasn’t the only topic discussed regarding her performance in the tournament.
New Balance, Gauff’s sponsor since she was 14, now has a line of custom clothing and shoes created in collaboration with the world No. 3. This time, the sportswear brand faced criticism for the outfits it provided for Gauff.
The American participated in the Finals for the third consecutive time, improving on her result from last year, when she lost in the semifinals. This year, she emerged as the surprising champion, defeating the favorite Aryna Sabalenka in the semis and an inspired Zheng Qinwen in the final. During the tournament, Gauff wore a purple outfit, which was commented on by Rennae Stubbs on her podcast with Caitlin Thompson.
“I love that the finalists wore purple,” co-host Caitlin Thompson said. “Coco’s New Balance kit was the best I’ve seen her in.”
“Her stuff is so cool,” responded Stubbs, the former coach of Serena Williams.
Thompson then added that, while she liked Gauff's recent purple outfit, she feels the brand sometimes misses the mark with her attire. “Her stuff is often good, but a lot of times they put her in extremely tight and very revealing clothes.”
“This one I felt like was quite… She’s got an insane physique, so it’s not like anything’s going to be unflattering on her, but this one for me just was 10 out of 10.”
Despite the criticisms, Gauff seems happy with her sponsor. Speaking about her partnership with New Balance, she mentioned to Andscape: “I’ve been with the brand since I was 14, so they have been there for every step of my journey and truly care about me as a person — not just an athlete.”
Gauff launched her own signature shoe (CG1) in 2022 and recently released the latest version (CG2). “The entire team at New Balance is awesome to work with,” said the 2023 US Open champion. “So going through the process for a second time was so great.”
