France’s
Alize Cornet has urged the tennis world to come out
and support the former world number one
Simona Halep.
The Romanian tennis star is currently spending time on the
sidelines after being provisionally suspended since failing the dope test last
year after the US Open.
Earlier this year, Halep received a separate breach of
anti-doping rule, a move that she called ‘harassment’.
Corent, in a post on social media platform X — previously known
as Twitter — urged the tennis community to come out and support Halep.
"Come on people, let's join forces. This is going way
too far, and for far too long @itia_tennis @ITFTennis. The tennis world just
wants what's fair. We want #JusticeForSimona,” she posted.
Australia’s Ellen Perez also posted a message and stated
that Halep deserves a fair trial to prove her innocence.
"Irrelevant of if you believe Simona Halep is innocent
or not, every athlete deserves a fair and timely trial. How the ITIA and ITF is
handling this is beyond poor. I urge other athletes to speak up because if it
was you in this situation you’d hope for the same,” she posted.
Halep has an impressive record while playing at the highest level
where she has won two Grand Slam titles.
Her first major title triumph came in the year 2018 when she
lifted the French Open by beating America’s Sloane Stephens in the final with a
score of 3–6, 6–4, 6–1.
A year later, Halep won her second big title in London
where she defeated America’s Serena Williams in the final in straight sets with
a score of 6-2, 6-2.
