Elena Rybakina produced a stunning display against Ekaterina Alexandrova, defeating the alternative 6-4, 6-4 to seal a third win in this year's WTA Finals and continue her incredible form.
She had no pressure going into this final match, with her already confirmed to top the group. However, she still wanted to complete the Round Robin stage with a win.
Before the match began, there was off-court drama with Madison Keys pulling out of the tie after suffering from a illness. The first alternative was Mirra Andreeva, who was pipped at the last minute by Rybakina in the Race to Riyadh. She had the chance to make her highly anticipated debut, but she was not classed fit enough to compete. At the same time, the 18-year-old had been competing in the doubles event with Diana Shnaider, having played only yesterday.
This meant the second alternative, Alexandrova, got her chance to make her debut in this prestigious event. With a huge financial reward on the line, it was a great opportunity for Alexandrova to pick up a big win.

Rybakina's impresses form continues

Despite her looking imperious on her serve throughout, it could have been a different story in the early stages after the Kazakhstani almost fell behind to Alexandrova in the second game, but was able to save the solitary break point to level affairs.
The two big hitters continued to pepper each other with hugs shots, trying to force each other to made a mistake. Once more, the door fell ajar for the Russian, who had two break points to take a 4-3 lead, but again Rybakina firmly slammed it shut. Three games later, Rybakina would have a golden chance of her own to take command in this set.
Despite Alexandrova serving at an exceptional level, which included six aces in the first set, she then started to become outclassed by the former Wimbledon champion. Rybakina would drop just two points in the final three games of the opening set, pouncing on a double fault late on from Alexandrova which set her up with two break points. She clinically clinched the first one to break the 30-year-olds serve, and would then go on to comfortably serve it out.
Alexandrova's level slightly fell off in these last few games, but a large part of that was down to the brilliance of Rybakina, who continued her ominous form into the second set. Alexandrova just about holds her serve before Rybakina wins three consecutive games, including a crucial break, to give her the upper hand. More errors from Alexandrova was making it easier for Rybakina to run away, but a lethal forehand and big serves consistently forced Alexandrova to fall back.
The world number 10 managed to find some breathing space with a hold to love, but once more Rybakina came charging back at her. She followed with a hold to love, with a second break coming after a double-fault from her opponent allowed her to steal a march.
She was 5-2 and one game away from victory. However, it would not be plain sailing. The former world number three was instantly broken back by a resurging Alexandrova, who then held to go within one game of levelling in the second set. Rybakina had the chance to serve it out again, but a brace of double-faults gifted Alexandrova the chance to level proceedings. Rybakina saved this, along with another break point which followed. She then set herself up with two match points, with her big serve getting her over the line in emphatic fashion.
She will top the group with three wins, and six sets from seven. Her purple patch has prolonged after a successful end to the Asian swing saw her qualify for the Tour Finals. Her opponent will be confirmed tomorrow, with one of Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff or Jessica Pegula set to challenge her for a place in the final.
