Elena Rybakina has eased into the Quarter-Finals at 2023
Wimbledon as her title defence continues albeit through a retirement against
Beatriz Haddad Maia on Centre Court.
Rybakina went 4-1 up against the Brazilian but in horrific scenes, Haddad Maia retired in tears with a hip injury in another blow after recent injury problems.
Pulling up early on with some kind of pain or spasm in her hip, her hands were visibly shaking and she was trying to steady her breathing.
The trainer was then called with it seemingly happening on a routine backhand but suddenly pulling up.
She went off court and retired soon after not even being able to carry her bag off the court due to the amount of pain she was in.
After starting the grass court season injured, she ends it injured as Haddad Maia just can't catch a break on the surface.
Rybakina who also benefited from Alize Cornet falling and getting injured in helping her through during her tie with the Kazakh will now face the winner of Jabeur v Kvitova.
But while it is plain sailing for Rybakina, the hope will be that Haddad Maia's injury is not too serious.
