Emma Raducanu again struggled with the conditions this time at the
Ningbo Open as she continues her Asian tour swing albeit it has been more of a nightmare at times for the former US Open champion.
Raducanu was facing Lin Zhu and after winning the first set, she looked on course to likely seal the win at the
Ningbo Open. But she started to perform erratically and at 3-4, she decided to take a medical timeout as a doctor and physio checked her vitals once again just like at the Wuhan Open.
After winning the first set, she won five more games and slumped to a 6-1 loss in the final set as the conditions took their toll on the Brit again.
Raducanu said at the time in Wuhan where temperatures soared past 30 degrees that she had began feeling dizzy and was struggling to cope. She called for the doctor, had her vitals checked and decided to withdraw rather than take further risks. Humidity levels at points soared past 70% during the match. "Last day at the doctor's in Wuhan... feeling better now. Shame I couldn't continue there but thank you for the messages," she wrote on Threads.
She vowed to push harder in Ningbo amid her recent disappointing turn of constantly struggling. “I just need to push harder,” Raducanu admitted. "It’s been a tough few weeks, but I want to get some more wins and keep building towards next year.”
“I think it’s a special feeling, I feel very comfortable, I feel like I get amazing support here, which is so nice. I love how invested the Chinese fans are and how much support they give.”
Albeit she went on to not withdraw but lose the set as Lin Zhu who is an opponent sat outside the top 200 took advantage of Raducanu's issues to win the second set 6-4 to set up a decider where she would have the serve.
Raducanu since getting injured which meant she couldn't play here last year was looking forward to returning given she has her mother who is Chinese in tow as well as a homecoming that she couldn't have before but in reality it has been a real nightmare. She has gone backwards in the rankings in recent weeks too and as well as losing to top names, it is very much an issue like many have had of just humidity and constant heat taking its toll. She may push through in the decider but questions will be asked regardless.
