The
Japan Open continues to deliver drama in Osaka with multiple big results to round off from through the night as it was mixed joy for the Canadians and also rising Czech ace
Tereza Valentova dumped out
Alexandra Eala.
Starting off with
Leylah Fernandez who turned heads with a heavily bandaged leg but she still managed to win fairly comfortably as she saw off Hailey Baptiste to start off the slate on Tuesday. She won through 6-2, 7-5. She was off to the races early with the former US Open finalist breaking emphatically for 2-1 before holding serve pretty easily. She broke again soon after but only after Baptiste spurned a 40-15 and advantage lead in the end as Fernandez snuck it just about at 4-1.
She held serve from there before staving off three break points as Baptiste couldn't convert and on her second set point she claimed it. From there, it was a turnaround in the second as despite getting broken early Baptiste was back for 3-3 breaking serve and then holding.
But after missing chances to make it 5-3, two in fact. She was broken at the worst possible moment. 6-5 to be exact as Fernandez went on to surge through. She now faces Dalma Galfi who made light work of Alycia Pars earlier today. Also in that section are Ann Li and Rebecca Sramkova. Also winners today over Varvara Gracheva and Joanna Garland.
Andreescu struggles as 18-year-old rising star thrives
While Suzhou WTA 125 champion Viktorija Golubic extended her winning streak to six matches with a three set defeat of former US Open champion
Bianca Andreescu..
It was a pretty wild match with Golubic weathering the storm 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Golubic served for victory at 5-3 in the second set but gave up the advantage after breaking only to clinch it with another service break in the final game. This after a pretty typical WTA clash with Andreescu clinching the second after losing the first to throw it into a decider which is always a bit of a lottery but the Swiss ace came out on top. She now faces Marie Bouzkova in the next round.
Tereza Valentova is a real star to watch and she continues to strut her stuff. This time against one of the success stories on tour this year in Alexandra Eala. After coming through qualifying, the next player on the Czech conveyer belt who saw off Greet Minnen to secure her spot in the main draw swept the Filipino ace aside 6-1, 6-2.
Eala was a let down on her serve as she won only 28% of second serve points which proved to be her downfall. Also Valentova managed to win 9 points off deuce as she managed to edge the key pressure points in a match that perhaps didn't have the scoreline that reflected the level of both. It was a poor display in facets for Eala but also Valentova was there to take advantage.
At only 18 and slowly being touted as the next one to watch she will hope to continue her progression this week in Osaka. She next plays the winner of the last match of the day as Elise Mertens faces Cristina Bucsa. That is late in to the first set.
