The Entry List has been confirmed ahead of the 2024
Japan Open which is due to take place between October 14-20 and runs after the men's edition which takes place this week currently.
First played in 2009, it is the precursor to the Toray Pan Pacific Open which is played in Tokyo and features a better field but in Osaka, it is still headlined by some top names. Including
Leylah Fernandez,
Bianca Andreescu and
Amanda Anisimova.
Albeit as has been pointed out on forums, there is no Naomi Osaka in Osaka which is perhaps a missed trick. Albeit she is playing most of the asian swing so likely is taking a week off during this tournament.
Samantha Stosur won the Japan Open title three times and is the most successful player in tournament history. She won it in 2009, 2013 and 2014 with Marion Bartoli also another notable winner. Ashlyn Krueger is the defending champion but is currently not in the field. The only ex Grand Slam champion involved is Bianca Andreescu. She has struggled in recent months after a bright start to her return.
The same can be said for Fernandez who has not won in three tournaments and perhaps by this point it could be a confidence booster or panic stations. Time will tell. Elise Mertens, Magdalena Frech and Marie Bouzkova are also involved.
