Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend completed the Sunshine Double with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in the Miami Open final, backing up their Indian Wells title with another WTA 1000 triumph.
The Czech-American pairing confirmed their consistency across both events, finishing the tournament with a controlled second set after a volatile opening phase.
The decisive moment of the match came in the first set, where Errani and Paolini held a strong position at 5-4, 40-15 on Paolini’s serve, with two set points to take the lead. However, they were unable to convert. Siniakova and Townsend responded with a sustained run of points, shifting momentum and forcing the set back on serve.
That sequence extended into a broader surge, with Siniakova and Townsend pushing ahead to 6-5. At that stage, with 0-40 on return, the match was interrupted by a rain delay that lasted several hours, adding a further layer of disruption to an already tight contest.
When play resumed, the Italian pair managed to force a tie-break, but the shift in momentum was already clear.

First-set escape shifts momentum decisively

The tie-break underlined the difference in execution. Siniakova and Townsend delivered a flawless sequence to close it 7-0, capitalising on their improved positioning and cleaner shot selection. After surviving multiple set points earlier in the set, they carried that momentum into the breaker without conceding a single point.
Structurally, their pairing remained consistent throughout the match. Siniakova controlled the baseline exchanges, while Townsend’s net presence disrupted the rhythm of Errani and Paolini. That balance proved decisive once the match moved beyond the opening phase.
In contrast, the Italian duo, despite their strong start, were unable to reassert control after missing their opportunities at 5-4. Their level dropped slightly in key moments, particularly on serve, allowing Siniakova and Townsend to dictate play more consistently.

Second-set control confirms dominance

The second set reflected a clear change in dynamic. After a balanced opening, Siniakova and Townsend secured an early break and quickly consolidated, taking control of both tempo and positioning. Their returning became more aggressive, while their service games remained stable under limited pressure.
From there, the match moved in one direction. The Czech-American pair won six consecutive games to close out the final 6-1, converting their advantage efficiently and limiting the Italians’ ability to extend rallies or regain initiative.
The victory extends their winning run across Indian Wells and Miami, where they dropped only one set during the latter tournament, in the semi-finals against Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani.
By completing the Sunshine Double, Siniakova and Townsend join a select group of pairs to win both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season. Previous teams to achieve the feat include Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova (1990), Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs (2002), Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur (2006, 2007), Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza (2015), and Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka (2019).
