Emma Raducanu 6-3, 7-5, advancing to the fourth round
at
Indian Wells. The world No. 2 didn't play at her best level, but she
demonstrated expertise in crucial moments, securing her 10th victory at Tennis
Paradise.
Raducanu
has little to reproach herself for as she displayed a good level of play.
However, it wasn't enough to truly threaten Sabalenka. Despite securing two
wins, Raducanu will drop in the rankings, losing 37 positions to reach world
No. 287 in the live ranking due to not defending the points from the fourth
round in 2023.
The first
set was decided by details, with both players dominating on their service
games. Sabalenka was more aggressive in seeking winners, while Raducanu
showcased solid defensive skills to extend the rallies.
The first
break point came in the sixth game in favor of Sabalenka, who then increased
her lead to 5-2 on her serve. Raducanu faced two set points against her but
managed to hold her service game. She then had four break opportunities, but
couldn't convert them to extend the set, allowing the Belarusian to take it
6-3.
The
beginning of the second set was also closely contested, with both players
exhibiting strong serving. Midway through the set, Sabalenka secured the
crucial break, but Raducanu quickly responded, maintaining the balance. With
the score tied at 5-5, the world No. 2 secured the decisive break, tipping the
balance in her favor. From her service, Sabalenka had to overcome the final weapons
from her rival, but ultimately, the Belarusian athlete closed out the victory
6-3, 7-5
Despite not
playing at her best, Sabalenka managed to overcome Raducanu, who continues to
show improvement in 2024. Sabalenka advanced to the fourth round and will face
the winner of the match between the 23rd seed Emma Navarro and the 16th seed
Elina Svitolina.
