Blasting into the big one 💥 @leylahfernandez and @TaylorTownsend dominate Gauff/Pegula 6-0, 6-4 to secure their place in the Women's Doubles Final. #RolandGarros
After coming up short last year by losing in the final of the Roland Garros (French Open), Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff continued their struggles by losing in the semi-finals to Taylor Townsend and Leylah Fernandez.
It was supposed to be a sensational doubles showdown in Paris but it didn't really live up to the hype. Pegula and Gauff have been shaky in doubles this year though they did manage to beat these opponents back at the Miami Open. It was a match where Fernandez and Townsend played really well and possibly should have won the match but they fell apart in the most important moments.
That didn't happen this time around as they came out strong with an emphatic performance smashing Pegula and Gauff in the opening set 6-0. Bagels in doubles are very rare but this one was served by the American/Canadian combo. They dominated play with 10 winners compared to only one by the US combo.
The second set was more competitive as Gauff and Pegula played much better but they once again couldn't really create too much pressure on their opponents. We once again didn't see the American combo break their opponents and it was mostly a combo of not being able to outplay them in rallies. On their own serve, Gauff and Pegula struggled a bit but managed to keep it for the better part of the second set. It resulted in a close affair but when it mattered the most Fernandez and Townsend were on top of it.
They broke in the final game of the match to finish things off 6-4 in the second set. It was a fast-paced match that finished after online 66 minutes with the Canadian/American combo posting 24 winners to only 7 winners by Gauff and Pegula. No grand slam for them in Paris.
