First top-3 win for Caroline Garcia since 2022 Cincinnati! The Frenchwoman takes out Gauff in three sets 💪
Caroline Garcia is into the Quarter-Finals of the 2024 Miami Open after a stunning 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win over Coco Gauff with the home hope dumped out at the Last 16 stage by the no.23 seed.
Garcia who has struggled for form since winning the WTA Finals at the end of 2022 will look for a resurgence similar to Maria Sakkari's last week who reached the final of the 2024 Indian Wells Open and has a good chance to do so with Danielle Collins or Sorana Cirstea awaiting next up.
Garcia won after one hour and 43 minutes sealing the opening set through one break at 2-0 up with the rest of the set seeing no break point opportunities on either side as Garcia in particular produced an epic serving display to restrict Gauff to minimal points no mind opportunities.
Albeit like most WTA games, it can turn on a knife edge and Garcia faltered in the second being easily beaten 6-1 after two breaks of serve on the bounce from Gauff to make it 4-0. The set could've been a bagel but Garcia saved her skin, but in the next game, it was a rampant service hold to love to take it and send it all the way.
But for those thinking Gauff would be in the ascendancy, they would be wrong. After a frantic opening game in which Garcia saved four break points, this slice of luck proved pivotal as she broke easily in the following game to go 2-0 and then 3-0 up. Garcia like the first set handed out no more opportunities on her serve with a pivotal break coming again at the end of the tie on a second match point to seal it with Garcia.
As the Frenchwoman puts on her social media and her trademark celebration, Fly with Caro and it has certainly taken off into the Quarter-Finals this evening. Superb display to dump out the World Number Three who could've been World Number Two if she had won this week and was playing her home tournament.
