Andy Murray withdrew from the doubles today at the Miami Open where he was due to play with Sebastian Korda and he has revealed why with the former World No.1 suffering a serious ankle injury in what could be the final straw for the Brit in his retirement tour.
Murray lost out 7-5, 5-7, 6-7(2) to Tomas Machac on Sunday evening and he stated on his Instagram that he has suffered a full rupture of his ATFL and near full thickness rupture of his CFL (ligaments in his ankle). He said that he will be out for an 'extended period', but did confirm he would be back jesting that he would have one hip and no ankle ligaments. He will see a specialist when he returns home, he confirmed.
This though could have repercussions with Wimbledon likely being the earliest that he would return. It is fairly likely that the three-time Grand Slam champion was set to retire at SW19 in front of his home fans, but now it will be a race against the clock to be ready and also without playing, his Olympic bid could also take a hit. Amid poor form in recent months which has started to look up recently, this isn't the news that he would have wanted to hear.
"Yesterday towards the end of my match in Miami I suffered a full rupture of my ATFL and near full thickness rupture of my CFL. I will see an ankle specialist when I return home to determine next steps. Goes without saying this is a tough one to take and I’ll be out for an extended period. But I’ll be back with 1 hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right," he wrote.
