"I'm so sorry I was really looking forward to play today, but unfortunately my health doesn't allow me. Thank you for your support." - Anna Kalinskaya With Anna Kalinskaya's withdrawal, Maria Sakkari moves into the quarterfinals.
On Manic Monday at the Miami Open, one of the main ties was set to see Maria Sakkari who reached the Indian Wells final take on Anna Kalinskaya who reached the Dubai final recently for a spot in the Quarter-Finals. But only half an hour before play was due to begin, the latter withdrew owing to poor health.
Kalinskaya had previously defeated Xinyu Wang and Jelena Ostapenko, the latter being a simple 6-3, 6-1 win for the 25-year-old. While for Sakkari, it was victories over two formidable opponents in terms of form this year in Yue Yuan and Dayana Yastremska.
Sakkari comes off the back of reaching the final at Indian Wells in her first tournament under new coach, David Witt. While Kalinskaya has had a superb year and was potentially set for a good run again, but was struck down with illness and as a result, the Greek receives a walkover.
"I'm so sorry I was really looking forward to play today, but unfortunately my health doesn't allow me. Thank you for your support," said Kalinskaya.
Elena Rybakina could now await in the Quarter-Finals for Sakkari who will face Madison Keys this evening. The Kazakh herself has been under the weather in recent weeks and admitted it may take some time to get back to her best. So the luck could yet be on the cards again for the former in carving her way through.
