Iga Swiatek aims to sharpen skills with Wim Fissette: "For sure I want to improve my serve"

Iga Swiatek has revealed the areas of her game she hopes to improve with her new coach, Wim Fissette. The 5-time Grand Slam champion decided to end her collaboration with Tomasz Wiktorowski, who had been with her for three years and supported her through four of her major titles.

Before the WTA Finals, Swiatek explained that the coaching change was aimed at gaining new perspectives in her approach. “My perspective is, as always, long-term, not short-term. I said many times that my career is a marathon for me, not a sprint, and I’m working, operating and making decisions with this approach,” she said about her partnership with Fissette.

The Belgian coach brings impressive credentials to the WTA Tour, having worked with several high-profile players, including Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka, Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka, between others.

When asked which areas of her game she aims to improve, Swiatek smiled and replied, “If I’m going to answer that, then everybody is going to know what is my weaker side,” said the 4-time French Open champion. “I think it’s kind of obvious. For sure I want to improve my serve, as I’ve been doing for past years. I feel like I still need to continue that. For sure I’m not a complete player.”

“I think tactically there are many ways I could go and have more variety on court. Wim has some nice ideas,” added the world No. 2. “Honestly, for now, we’ve just been preparing for this tournament and getting to know each other. The real changes, we’re going to talk about them during the off-season because that’s the proper time to do it.”

“For now I’ve been trying to just be in the best shape for this tournament. Some technicalities, we’re going to work on them in the pre-season,” Iga Swiatek concluded.
