Former World No.1 and Wimbledon champion,
Garbine Muguruza hit a milestone this week as for the first time since 2008, the Spaniard does not have a WTA Ranking as her hiatus from tennis continues.
Muguruza last played on this day last year where she lost in the first round in Lyon against Linda Noskova before she decided to take a break from the sport after a downward spiral following her WTA Finals win in Guadalajara. She only won back-to-back matches on two occasions in 2022 after a resurgence in winning the end-of-season event in 2021, a similar decline felt by Caroline Garcia albeit not as dramatic.
After not playing since Lyon, she announced in April that she would be taking a break from competition in order to spend time resting and recharging with friends and family. Amanda Anisimova similarly took a break around this time due to the rigours of the tour and mental health, but unlike Muguruza has since return to begin 2024.
Muguruza has since got engaged to boyfriend, Arthur Borges in May, but has been keeping fit during her time away despite not playing any tennis with a passion of Zumba also entering her day-to-day life.
“As of today I have no intention (to return to competition),” Muguruza
told Women’s Health back in September 2023. “My plan right now is to sleep, rest, be with my loved ones, make up for lost time...I don't look beyond what I'm doing today, tomorrow and this week.”
“Tennis has no place in my routine,” Muguruza continued. “I still follow my peers, from time to time I still play but not intensely, more for fun. It doesn't occupy my mind, my day or my routines. I'm really taking a real break and trying to stay away from the courts.” Now her ranking is gone entirely and there is still since this interview no indication that a return is imminent.
