In a tense all-American affair, teenager
Coco Gauff battled past compatriot
Shelby Rogers to reach the semifinals of the
Adelaide International.
Despite trailing by a set and a break in the second set, Gauff was able to summon her incredible tennis prowess to pull off the amazing comeback. The 16-year old fought off an abysmal first set, punctuated by unforced errors, to overcome Rogers 2-6 6-4 6-4.
Squaring off for the first time on the WTA circuit, Rogers capitalized on Gauff's inconsistency to claim the first set. Up a break and leading 4-2 in the second, the World No.53 was unable to hold serve as Gauff rallied off four consecutive games to level the match at one set apiece.
Nonetheless, momentum seemed to be on Rogers side as she obtained an early break in the final set. However, her younger opponent displayed nerves of steel as she aggressively attacked from the baseline, before finishing points decisively at the net. After breaking back, Gauff held and Rogers faltered as she served to stay in the match. The 28-year old ended the match on her fourth double fault, giving Gauff the victory in an hour and 50 minutes.
