Aryna Sabalenka overjoyed at the 2025 WTA Finals
The 2026 tennis season is very close to commencing, and with it a whole host of tournaments featuring the best players in the world. The Brisbane International is no exception, with it taking place from January 5-11.
A stacked field will take to the court in eastern Australian with the hopes of kicking off their campaign by lifting a trophy. It will not be easy, with their route possibly involving overcoming some of the best players on the WTA Tour.
No more tougher than world number one Aryna Sabalenka. The reigning champion looks to defend her title whilst commencing a positive vein of momentum heading into the Australian Open. She defeated qualifier Polina Kudermetova in three sets after falling behind early on but showing her class to get back into it.
The world number four and five are likely to prove to be her biggest competition. Amanda Anisimova has had a crazy 2025, and will be looking to take that next step and continue her positive form into 2026. So will Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh defeated Sabalenka in the WTA Finals a couple of months ago, repeating the fate of a prior matchup in the 2024 Brisbane International final where Rybakina overcame the four-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets.
American duo Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys are also on the quest for success. Especially Keys, who is set to defend the ranking points from her Adelaide International and Australian Open title. 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva will also have a chunk of points coming off from the upcoming WTA 1000 events in a couple of months, but can focus on getting back to her best after a turbulent end to 2025.
Fellow Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova is the seventh top 10 player to confirm their involvement in Brisbane. 2025 ASB Classic champion Clara Tauson will switch her attention from New Zealand to Australia while the likes of Linda Noskova, Liudmila Samsonova, Karolina Muchova, Leylah Fernandez and Paula Badosa are also hoping to have their name in the business end of the tournament.
UK tennis fans will be able to follow all the live action from Down Under on Sky Sports. Australian viewers can keep up with the events on beIN Sports while fans from America closely following the progress of their top players can watch on the Tennis Channel.
